It has been a very hectic (but not necessarily depressing) period. The work has been intense & exacting, but from a professional point, most interesting. What we miss most is any relaxation […] I have been encouraged by friendly comments on my work from Ottawa — & by the practical support they have given me. The most alarming & discouraging feature is that neither the British nor French seem to have taken their bitter lesson to heart. I fear we are in for a long unsettled & tense period. […]
