English

Informant: And he was mean! Boy was he mean! Oh, it didn’t take much... And they never showed him how to eat with a knife, a spoon or a fork. He’d eat with his fingers. Oh yes! I saw him eat a hundred times. They’d give him... They were going to give him blackberries in a bowl. He’d eat the blackberries with his fingers, you know. Oh yes. And he’d understand what you’d tell him because the woman... When we’d go see him, she’d go to the door of his room. He’d be lying down and the woman would say, “Get up Jerome.” She called him “Jeromo.” “Get up Jeromo.” He’d get up. And when they wanted him to go to bed, you know, when it was late enough to go to bed, they’d say, “Jeromo, go to bed.” And he’d go to bed. He’d understand everything you’d tell him.
