Death on a Painted Lake allowed Dr. Gregory Klages, a self-educated web designer, artist, and historian, to bring his varied skills and interests together in this unique undertaking.
In 2016, his book The Many Deaths of Tom Thomson: Separating Fact from Fiction was published by Dundurn Press. The book has appeared on the National Post Canadian non-fiction bestsellers list, and Writers' Trust of Canada included the title in its list of Best Books of 2016. Klages’ research on the death of Tom Thomson was included in Archives & Canadian Narratives, edited by C. Verduyn & K. Garay, published by Fernwood Press in 2011. His work has also been published in the Asian Review of Canadian Studies, American Review of Canadian Studies, Saskatchewan History, and Ontario History.
Abiding themes within Klages’ research include how communities construct and maintain their sense of identity. Research has included a micro-study of the contributions 'Freemasons' made to life in a small-Ontario settlement during the late 19th-century, and histories of political success told by arts advocacy organizations in Canada.
Klages works as a sessional instructor and independent researcher.
